Pioneer VSX-1015TXK Receiver
Pioneer Has Another Winner
Date Created: 05/24/2006 Last Updated: 05/24/2006 Authors: Staff

Testing Criteria

Pioneer has another winner in its VSX-1015TXK receiver. Tested with a very solid Denon DVD-3910 Universal DVD/CD/SACD/DVD-Audio Player and these totally kick-ass M60ti Floorstanding Speakers. We were lucky enough to catch a slow day at a boutique home-audio store on the Upper West Side with a very cool owner and a nice listening room. As usual we brought along some of our own CDs to compare the sound we get from the system compared to what we're used to hearing. Treblemaker tested this system with the following CDs:

Overall

This is a very good the receiver. First of all, it has tons of little "goodies" that make it user friendly, easy to set-up and a great purchase that will deliver premium sound and versatility for years. It has the latest surround formats like Dolby Digital and DD EX as well as DTS, DTS ES Matrix and Discrete and DTS 96/24 and others like Dolby Pro Logic, DPL II and DPL IIx and as well as the THX Select 2 Certified modes. The amp section has 120 going to the speakers. It has a 7.1 pre out section for use with power amps if you should need it down the road. And for you people who do not know how to setup your speakers, the receiver has the MCACC system so that it can correctly determined your size and distance of the speakers from the supplied mic. The THX Select2-certified receiver also offers an onboard processor for Windows Media Audio 9 Professional (WMA9 Pro), so if you hook up PC or a WMA-compatible optical media player (via an optical or coaxial digital-audio connection) you'll be able to enjoy surround-formatted Web content, too--gaming will never be the same.

Design

Pioneer has traditionally stuck with black for a majority of their audio products, and as you'll see from the picture this is no exception. It's a clean design (not unlike a Macintosh - we can dream too) with very few buttons and/or knobs to clutter the display. The remote is pretty straight-forward and basically any task you want to perform can be accomplished from the comfort of your favorite chair.

Versatility

As you can see in the picture of the back, this receiver provides almost endless opportunities for multiple speakers, speaker systems, audio-ins, audio-outs, gaming systems, iPods , DVRs...basically anything and everything. Additionally, for those of you looking to make this an integral part of your home's entertainment system, the receiver has up conversion through all of the video inputs like composite to s-video or component video. Connections consist of 5 digital-audio inputs (3 optical, 2 coaxial) and 1 output (optical), 5 each composite- and S-video inputs (with 5 accompanying left/right stereo analog audio jacks), and 3 high-bandwidth (5 Hz to 105 MHz) component-video inputs. The unit offers convenient, high-quality binding-post terminals for all speaker connections (7 plus left/right outputs for a stereo speaker-B output). And you'll also appreciate the receiver's 7.1-channel RCA preamp outputs whenever you're ready to move to higher-power amplification.
